We partner with challengers, companies willing to challenge the status quo, by accompanying them on their journey to take their business to the next stage by providing them with a new point of view and the analysis and tools needed to make difficult decisions We have followed a time-tested strategy of limiting the number of our investments, allowing us to form deep, true friendships based on mutual respect. This has enabled us to create unique value with the challengers whose journeys we have shared. When Taiyo began in 2001, the ideas of corporate governance and trustee responsibility had not yet been widely accepted in Japan. As a result, at that time most investors in the Japanese market believed that it was not possible to significantly influence the management of listed companies as a minority investor. We, however, questioned that widely held view, and we have proven that the common “wisdom” at that time was incorrect. As the views and investment environment have continued to evolve in Japan, the approach we pioneered has became known as Engagement Investing and others have attempted to mimic our success. 20 years have passed since we started our journey. We feel it is time for “Tokowaka” (seek periodical changes with fresh perspectives) and question the current conventional thinking, and we again endeavor to do what others believe to be impossible. Fence-sitters say it is impossible for Japan to return to its heyday, but we are not ones to idlily stand by and do nothing. We share the passion and convictions of the bold leaders who passionately strive to build a brighter future for the world by using their innovation and ground-breaking actions to do what others believe is impossible or cannot even imagine.
